BACK TO WORK DURING A PANDEMIC

After a three month pause due to the corona virus, Operation Northern Comfort has resumed responding to requests for assistance, At this time we are limited to outdoor projects. Volunteers and others on a job site have their temperature taken, are questioned regarding potential virus exposure, must wear face masks and their presence is documented. Additionally, some projects have been hindered by shortages of pressure treated lumber.

In spite of these controlling factors, July, 2020 has proved to be a busy month;

  • A replacement porch deck and new wheel chair ramp was built in Oneida. 10 volunteers worked in oppressive heat, and one short heavy rainfall over two days to complete the project. See attached photos.
  • Repairs were completed on a 5 year old ramp in the same Oneida neighborhood
  • Volunteers recovered, and placed in storage, an aluminum ramp from a Phoenix residence, following the client’s recovery from ankle surgery.
  • Assistance was given to a Methodist Men’s group at ramp builds in Manlius and Bayberry.
  • Financial assistance through a grant and partial loan enabled a client to purchase a used van with a wheel chair lift.
  • After a two year effort, a client and her family became eligible to purchase a home in Syracuse. A financial grant allowed purchase of some kitchen appliances.
  • A home belonging to a deceased couple needed significant repairs for their daughter and her family to move in. A financial grant enabled them to purchase flooring materials and paint.
  • Three additional projects, all concerning accessibility issues, are now under consideration for August projects.
