Dr. Linda LeMura, President of Le Moyne College, and Norm Andrzejewski, CEO of Operation Northern Comfort, announce the creation of the Rev. Charles Major Memorial Scholarship.  They are joined by St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Liverpool, and St. Lucy’s Parish, Syracuse. We invite you to join us in honoring Fr. Major’s memory by contributing to this scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has made a commitment to community service.

Fr. Major was one of the founders of Operation Southern (now Northern) Comfort. He was a visionary, a participative leader and a true friend to all.  He graduated from LeMoyne College and served the school in a variety of roles.

He was sincerely humble. He recognized the dignity of all and accepted others as they were. He

practiced an inclusive faith, valuing the participation of all.  As pastor of St. Joseph the Worker from 1977 until his retirement in 2011, he delegated assignments; he gave people serious jobs, trusting that they would perform them well. He presided over an exuberant flock.

He assisted in a variety of ways at St. Lucy’s Parish from 2011 to 2018. The larger community also benefited from his efforts, from highway cleanup to the food pantry.  He was an active member of the Liverpool Clergy Association, since he believed that all were honoring and praying to the same Supreme Being. He shared the pulpit with many colleagues; he promoted interfaith dialogue. He championed women.

The Rev. Charles Major Memorial Scholarship will be a testament to his life and serve as a continuing remembrance of his ideals.  The first award will be announced at the Operation Northern Comfort Crawfish Festival, May 4, 2019.
